Streatham
Streatham was built generously. The tall Victorian semis of the Telford Park estate, the substantial houses along Leigham Court Road and the streets rising towards Streatham Hill were put up with a fireplace in nearly every room, which is why so many SW16 rooftops carry stacks with four, five or six pots apiece.
Those long flues are exactly the kind of chimney that rewards proper, regular sweeping. A tall flue holds more soot, a shared stack hides more surprises, and a house converted into flats can leave everyone unsure which fireplace connects to which pot. This is bread and butter to us: we sweep the flues in use, smoke test where required, identify what serves what, and advise on capping the flues that have retired.
Naish & Sons is the oldest established chimney sweep firm in London. Five generations of one family have carried the brushes since 1870, and Streatham has been on the round for the whole of living memory. Whether it is your family home or a property you let out, you get the same careful work and an official NACS certificate every time, with the van coming up from our base in Coulsdon.
What We Do Here
Several fireplaces, one stack, no idea what connects where? We sweep the flues in use, trace pots to fireplaces and advise on the rest, with extra flues on the same visit priced fairly.
Solid fuel appliances in rented homes need proper upkeep and a carbon monoxide alarm by law. We work with landlords and agents across SW16 and issue a NACS certificate for the file every time.
A sooty smell in summer, smoke curling into the room, a fire that will not draw: all signs of a flue that needs attention. We find the cause and put it right, honestly.
Good To Know
Only the flues you actually use need sweeping regularly, so in most houses that is one or two, not all six. Each pot serves its own flue, usually one per fireplace. That said, disused flues should not be forgotten entirely: an uncapped, unswept flue can still collect nests, debris and rainwater. We can tell you which pot belongs to which fireplace and advise on capping or venting the ones you never light.
That summer smell is old soot and tar in the flue absorbing moisture from humid air, which wakes the odour up and lets it drift down into the room. It is one of the classic signs of a chimney overdue a sweep. Clearing the soot out removes most of the smell at source, and we can also advise on ventilation and cowls if the problem keeps returning.
Yes, regularly. If a rented property has a working fireplace or stove, keeping the flue swept and safe is part of looking after your tenants, and rented homes with solid fuel appliances must have a carbon monoxide alarm by law. We provide an official NACS certificate with every sweep for your records, and we are happy to arrange access directly with tenants and sweep multiple properties in one visit.
Yes, once a year is the standard guidance. Gas burns cleaner than wood or coal, but the flue can still be blocked by nests, debris or crumbling brickwork, and a blocked flue is dangerous whatever the fuel, because the fumes have nowhere to go but back into the room. We sweep and check flues serving gas fires alongside the solid fuel work.
Allow up to an hour for the first flue, including sheeting up and cleaning down, and a bit less for each one after that because the room protection is already in place. Streatham's taller houses have long flues, but length is rarely the slow part; heavy build-up or a blockage is what adds time. We will always give you an honest estimate when you book.
All of SW16: Streatham Hill, the streets around Streatham Common, the Telford Park estate, Leigham Court Road, Streatham Vale and down through Norbury. Our family has swept south London since 1870, five generations of us, and Streatham has been part of the round for as long as anyone can remember. If you are just outside those streets, call us anyway, the answer is usually yes.
