Balham

A family firm for Balham's family homes

Balham is a place people put down roots, and its houses show it. The Edwardian terraces of the Hyde Farm Estate, the red-brick homes of the Nightingale Triangle and the streets running off Bedford Hill were all built around the fireplace, and in the last decade those fireplaces have come roaring back, with wood burners appearing in living rooms and extended kitchens across SW12.

A stove that gets used every evening through winter needs looking after. Wood lays down tar and creosote in the flue faster than any other fuel, and that build-up is exactly what feeds a chimney fire. Our answer is simple and always has been: a proper sweep, brush and vacuum, on a sensible schedule, with a smoke test where required and an official NACS certificate handed over before we leave. We come up from our base in Coulsdon and are in Balham all year round.

We are Naish & Sons, the oldest established chimney sweep firm in London. Since 1870, five generations of our family have swept the chimneys of south London, father to son, and the photograph of the two of them that started it all still travels in the back window of our van. When we say we treat your home like family, we mean it in the most literal way there is.

Good To Know

Questions we hear in Balham

We use our wood burner most evenings in winter. How often should it be swept?

For a stove burning wood that hard, the guidance is quarterly while it is in use, and once a year at the very least. Wood leaves tar and creosote in the flue faster than any other fuel, and a stove that runs every evening builds it up quickly. A clean flue also means the stove draws better and gives out more heat for the same logs, so regular sweeping pays for itself.

When is the best time of year to book a sweep in Balham?

Late spring to early autumn is the sweet spot. The fire is cold, the diary is quieter and you are ready for the first cold snap rather than queueing behind half of south London in October. If you have left it until winter, do not put it off until next year, we will still fit you in. The one thing we would never recommend is skipping a season altogether.

What actually happens during the visit?

We arrive when we say we will, lay dust sheets, seal the fireplace opening and sweep the full length of the flue with brush and vacuum working together. Where required we finish with a smoke evacuation test to check the flue draws as it should, then hand you an official NACS certificate. A single straightforward flue usually takes under an hour, and the room is left exactly as we found it.

Our terrace shares a chimney stack with next door. Does that matter?

Not at all, it is how most of Balham was built. A shared stack carries separate flues for each house, one for each fireplace, twisting past each other on the way up. We sweep only your flue, and nothing we do affects next door. If smoke or smells seem to be crossing between the two houses, tell us, because that can be a sign of a breach between flues that wants looking at.

Can you stop birds getting into the chimney?

Yes. The permanent answer is a proper bird guard or cowl fitted to the pot, which keeps birds, leaves and heavy rain out while still letting the flue breathe. If a nest is already in there we will clear it first, outside the protected nesting season of roughly March to August, and check the flue is fully open before the guard goes on.

Which parts of Balham do you cover?

All of SW12: the Hyde Farm Estate, the Nightingale Triangle, the streets off Bedford Hill and Balham High Road, and the edges towards Clapham South, Wandsworth Common and Tooting Bec. We have been sweeping this stretch of south London across five generations, so there are very few Balham streets we have not worked on at some point since 1870.

Also sweeping in Tooting, Streatham, Brixton, Dulwich, Croydon and across south London.
